Hillarity in the wording this CNN paragraph

“Kristin Palmer and Trent Wood were asleep in their home last week when a motorist allegedly drove into their bedroom around 4 a.m., mistakenly believing it was his ex-girlfriend’s home.”

So a motorist either did or didn’t, not allegedly. Did he mean to drive into his girlfriend’s house instead??  And if he mistakenly believed it was someone else’s house, then it means he didn’t allegedly run into the couple’s house… he really did.

All this could have been resolved if they just said “the alleged suspect drove into their house.”  Of course, the last part is still screwy.
